As a result, the ecological economic zoning of the Legal Amazon on a 1:2,500,000 scale would be completed, with a pilot area of 1:250,000. The project was carried out in partnership with the Brazilian Ministry of Aeronautics. The first step consisted of setting up the geo-referenced database on the Legal Amazon with abiotic data (geology, soil, relief, rainfall, fluviometry), biotic data (vegetation, land use patterns, anthropism, biodiversity conservation units) and cartographic basis (road system, hydrography, cities, towns, municipal, state and international boundaries) and on a municipal scale for socio-economic descriptive data, in a total of 200 socio-economic variables for each of the 576 municipalities available in 1991 and 250 variables for geographic data. This step was followed by the preparation of technical papers on the following topics: Conservation of Biodiversity; Agricultural and Forestry Development; Energy; Sustained Management in Tropical Rainforests; Geopolitics; Environmental Legislation and Institutional Organization; Mining and Gold-Digging in the Amazon; Amerindian population; Fishery Resources in the Brazilian Amazon; Extractive Reserves. FBDS also provided technical support to IBGE, by means of the acquisition and transfer of computer systems (hardware and software) and the hiring of specific training for its geoprocessing area.

AmountUS$ 100,000.00
AbstractThe project was a technical cooperation for the preparation of a bird biodiversity database in the Atlantic Rain Forest. Maps and reports on Brazilian ecosystems based on the Atlantic Rain Forest were also prepared, analyzing the distribution of the diversity of birds, fish and correlating them with vegetation, hydrography and local orography.
