Monte Alegre Project creates a standard for International Certification

In 1999, Klabin was the first company in the world to be awarded the certificate for medicinal plant (phytotherapy) management by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This FSC certificate is in recognition of the sustained management of forestry operations in accordance with the highest economic, environmental and social principles.

A new management of Klabin's phytotherapeutic resources can be defined based on the FBDS Monte Alegre Project, to be able to create trackability, which helped FSC establish the certification criteria for this activity.

The Project

The Klabin herbal medicine project is based on the use of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP).

It began in 1984 in the Klabin plant in Paraná, and its prime objective is to improve the quality of life of the community (company employees and their families) and the preservation and rational use of biodiversity of over 85,000 ha of native forests and commercial forestry plantations.

The manipulation laboratory produces around 30 products from medicinal plants. An inhouse pharmacy attends to sending the prescriptions are distributing the products. The operation also has a line of manipulated products ranging from preventive/therapeutic action of the plants to substances for hygiene and toiletries.

Phytotherapy represents up to 70% of an average of 40,000 general health inquiries for a target population of 15,000 people attended by the project.
